Dear Mr. Larsen,

Many thanks for your E-Mail. I am delighted to learn that you are a descendant of the Debora expedition.

I have not done much research on South African Scandinavians since the book was published. I do not currently have plans to update Scandinavians and South Africa.

Recently I have written a book entitled Swedish-American Landmarks Where to Go and What to See published by the Swedish Council of America, Minneapolis (1995).

In 1991 there was published in Finland An African Alternative: Nordic Migration to South Africa, 1815-1914 by Eero Kuparinen. Published by Finnish Historical Society, Helsinki and the Institute of Migration, Turku. The Finnish Historical Societys address is Arkadiankatu 16 B 28 SF-00100 Helsinki; Institute of Migration, Piispankatu 3 SF-20500 Turku. ISBN 951-8915-45-8.

Kuparinen makes some reference to the Debora expedition.

Some additional references to the expedition include: L. Jensenius, Debora-ekspeditionen til det indiske hav (The Debora Expedition to the Indian Ocean), in Nordmands-Forbundet 21/1928, pp. 14-16; Kjell Falck, Norsk handel, sjofart og kolonisationen pa Madagaskar 1865-1880 (Norwegian Trade,

Shipping and Colonization on Madagascar 1865-1880), in Sjofartshistorisk arsbok 1965, pp. 95-141.

Also there was reference to the expedition in the newspaper Morgenbladet 5.5.1880 in an article entitled Lidt om Debora-Expeditionen. These references are noted in Kuparinens book.

Perhaps this information may be helpful.

I have not checked whether my book can still be purchasedI have been thinking about making inquiries and when I learn something, I shall let you know.

Do keep in touch.

With best wishes,

Alan H. Winquist - Dept. of History Taylor University Upland, Indiana 46989.
